Bone Ash

The majority of Bone Ash is consumed by the Primary and Milled Products segments of the aluminum industry. It is for this reason REMET is distributing Aluminum Grade Bone Ash for these specific industries.

Bone Ash is prepared by burning the organic material from animal bones and has long been recognized by the non-ferrous metals casting industry as a mold release agent offering a number of benefits unmatched by competitive products.

Aluminum Grade

REMET’s Aluminum Grade Bone Ash offers the following benefits:

  • Superior Protection – it is not wetted by molten non-ferrrous metals. It therefore, provides superior protection to surfaces exposed to molten metals; such as molds or refractories in transfer troughs, filter boxes and other vessels.
  • Superior Castings – it is a pure natural product, manufactured under strictly controlled
conditions. This prevents the contamination of castings. And because bone ash adheres well to mold surfaces, non-ferrous metal castings obtained from molds dressed with REMET bone ash consistently features a smotther finish and is virtually free from holes, cracks and other surface defects.
  • Economical & Cost Efficient – it lasts longer, goes farther than competitive mold dressings. An equal amount of bone ash covers up to three times more surface than an equal amount of other agents.
  • Safe To Use – it is non-toxic, poses no fire hazards and requires no special handling pre cautions. As with any fine, powder-like material, normal protection against dust should be taken; including, adequate ventilation and/or dust masks.
  • Easy Housekeeping – competitive dressings are messy, difficult and time consuming to clean up. REMET bone ash makes housekeeping easy. Molds, refractories and other surfaces can be skimmed, wiped or brushed clean easily.

Synthetic Grade
UNIFORMITY OF PROPERTIES: Synthetic Bone Ash is manufactured under carefully controlled conditions from the highest quality raw materials available. Therefore, once a refinery has established the best way to use our product under its own operating conditions, it is expected that the material will behave uniformly.
IMPROVED AVAILABILTY: Synthetic Bone Ash is manufactured from raw materials, which are readily available.
EFFICIENCY: Users of Synthetic Bone Ash have found that the quantity of mold dressing used can be reduced, up to about one half the amount necessary when using natural bone ash. They have also reported that the life of the molds is significantly longer, up to twice as long, when Synthetic Bone Ash is being used as the mold dressing.
Note: Synthetic Bone Ash can be mixed with natural bone ash. In these cases, it is desirable to reduce the amount of mold dressing applied. This is the route used by several major copper refineries who switched from natural bone ash to the more economical synthetic bone ash.
DECREASED REJECTION RATE: The improved appearance of the castings obtained when using Synthetic Bone Ash will result in a decrease in the rejection rate. Refineries using Synthetic Bone Ash have found their castings look better because the surface is smoother. There are fewer holes, cracks, and other surface defects. This improved appearance is important because it makes a product much more pleasing to the customer. Very fine gauge copper wire still is being drawn from wire bars. Defects in the wire bars, which would cause no trouble when large diameter wire is being drawn, will cause serious problems when the wire is being drawn to a very small diameter.
