Colloidal Silica

Colloidal Silica Investment Casting Binders

Colloidal Silica is the most popular binder used in the precision investment casting industry today. It offers the investment caster a safe, economical, easy to use slurry component that performs well as either primary or backup slurry.

Colloidal Silica systems are very stable; able to form a long life ceramic slurry with a large range of refractory materials due to the binder’s chemical inertness. This versatility allows Colloidal Silica to form the basis of ceramic shells used for the casting of a large range of metal alloys.

Ceramic shells formed with colloidal silica binder’s offer several advantages for the investment process. The exceptionally strong bonds formed by the colloid enables ceramic shells to have a superior green and fired strength. Benefiting the investment caster with:

  • An increased maximum pour weight
  • Reduced material usage in the back up coat
  • Better handling

Furthermore, use of colloidal silica binders has allowed investment casters a greater freedom of design with an increased level of intricacy to castings.

Ceramic shells using colloidal silica binders also display excellent refractory properties, high thermal resistant, with good resistance to thermal shock and crucially little shrinkage.

Remet supplies our proprietary Colloidal Silica REAMSOL®, which has been specifically designed for the investment casting industry. In addition to our own formulation, we also supply LUDOX™ Colloidal Silica binders.

REMASOL®

Product Information

Colloidal Silica Binders

REMASOL® Colloidal Silica binders are aqueous colloidal dispersions of silica particles. The silica particles in REMASOL are non-crystalline, have a high specific surface area (One gram of REMASOL colloidal silica has a surface area of between 100 and 400 square meters!), and are negatively charged particles which have been stabilized with sodium hydroxide.

REMASOL Colloidal Silica’s have been specifically designed to meet the needs of the investment caster, for use as a primary or back up coat.

Remet supply REMASOL binders in two particle sizes:

  • 8 – 9 millimicron
  • 14 millimicron

The choice of REMASOL® grade is dependent upon the specific conditions under which it is to be used: refractory flours(s), processing conditions, alloy(s) being cast, etc. Your Remet Technical Sales Manager can recommend the proper grade to meet your specific requirements.

LUDOX®

Product Information

LUDOX® is a range of aqueous dispersions of silica particles. Because of their colloidal nature, particles of LUDOX have a very large specific surface area which accounts for their novel properties and wide variety of applications.

The choice of LUDOX grade is dependent upon the specific conditions under which it is to be used: refractory flours(s), processing conditions, alloy(s) being cast, etc. Your Remet Technical Sales Manager can recommend the proper grade to meet your specific requirements.
